Doncaster 40+ Newsletter
This week we’re combining two newsletters.
The fourth round of Shield was a novelty. AV had decided that all track events would be relays, and this was a very positive thing for most clubs as most appeared to have extra members coming out to support their club.
So it was all hands on deck and the men had six competing in the shot put with Andy Parrott and Scott Young making their first appearance. Charmaine Smith was also there to help the women.
Special mention must be made of Laura McLennan and Kath Gawthorn, the only W40 runners, who competed in the 2 x 1500, 2 x 800 and mixed 4 x 400, and also fitted in some field events.
Diamond Valley also turned out in force and finished ahead of Doncaster on sheer weight of numbers. So Diamond Valley won the M40 and W40 competitions with Doncaster coming second in both. My understanding is the Power Play only applies to the overall scores, and not to the age levels, so this was a tremendous effort from both teams.
Paul and Campbell both scored more than 1400 points, with Mark Purser also over 1000. A great effort. Charmaine broke the shot put record, as well as setting one in the high jump, while Darryl broke his long jump record.

The fifth round of Shield saw Doncaster athletes travelling quite a distance for their competition, so numbers were down, though the men still scored a big win over Collingwood and Diamond Valley. This was particularly pleasing after losing to Diamond Valley on the relay round the week before. Again we had multiple athletes covering multiple events with four scoring over 1,000 points. Paul Mierisch again led the way with 1532, after not scoring in his fifth event. Darryl broke his record in the 200 metres, breaking 30 seconds for the first time, and Graham set one in the M70 400.
With Kath injured and Laura unwell, Charmaine Smith carried the women, earning over 1,000 points in her four disciplines, all of them records.
