XCR “It’s a Wrap”: October, 2019
Congratulations to all on a great XCR season 2019! The season was full of challenges; body, mind and our many other personal commitments to fit around training and racing. There were a total of 27 men and 14 women competing for DAC in the 40+ division. Jim Finch managed to complete all 9 rounds of competition! (round 8 at Cruden Farm cancelled). The many challenges included a half marathon (completed by 8 athletes), 10km cross country at Bundoora (which would have risen to 12km if Cruden Farm ran as scheduled), 15km road race around Lake Wendoree (Ballarat), mud, wind, rain, cold, and the body not behaving as we hoped it would! Special congratulations to Colleen Kelly who was placed 3rd on the AV Winter Season Ladder (W55+).
The sense of camaraderie was very strong; all team members valued and supported. ‘Life’ and injuries affected many over the course of the season – a run in any of the events to be congratulated. Meeting up with Masters athletes from other clubs at events revealed all have the same struggles and all are happy when others overcome these. A number of Masters athletes fulfilled club official and team manager positions and assisted others at the club each and every week. For this we are extremely grateful! We also successfully ran the fundraiser BBQ/stall at Bundoora Park (Round 3), and achieved a profit of about $2,000 for the club. A huge thank-you to Campbell McLennan (and the McLennan family), Darryl Kilmartin, and many others for helping set up the new DAC marquee and flags and for all who supplied post-race food. A big thank you also to partners and friends of athletes for their support.
The Ruffey Runners group were also welcome invitation athletes at the relay events. Thank you to the following invitational athletes: Camilla Niewoudt, Julie Martyn, Tiffany Nanfra, Kim Fabris, Rochelle Hamilton, Belle Campbell, Mary-Catherine Tobin, Steve Venour, David Blair, Trevor Carter, Luke Russell, Whaddon Niewoudt, Greame Kentish, Rod Shellie, Ken Montgomery, Edwin Bakker, Dean Beveridge, Brock Goodings and Roger Sevenhuysen. Wow – what a crew! Many of these athletes baked very welcome post-run food, and put in a great showing during the events! We hope to see you again!

A fantastic effort by all those who broke, or set, new club records! These records have been established to give all a standard to aim for (i.e. records made to be broken in 2020), and give athletes of all ages well deserved recognition.
The summer season has just begun! (started Saturday 5th October) Those who competed over winter have a great starting point.
The summer season timetable is now available via the AV website (see events tab, then AVSL – AV Shield League). 12 rounds of competition are followed by a final (if the team qualifies – individuals athletes in the final also need to meet qualifying requirements which are based on participation NOT performance – competing at a minimum number of 4 rounds, and at least once in the event/s in question).
Congratulations to all on a very successful winter season! We look forward to seeing you during the summer! For enquiries re summer competition please see the AV website, contact AV directly by phone or speak to DAC team managers Campbell McLennan 0414 533 677, or David Mitchell summer.coordinator@doncasterac.org.au
A big thanks goes to Kath Gawthorn for writing up all our winter newsletters too!
