Doncaster Newsletter
The latest round of Shield was the Nitro round, and being at our track, it was well supported. Of course, holding it the day before the Zatopek meant some of our top athletes were unavailable.
It was a different competition, with unusual distances and bonus points for the field events – if you landed the shot or javelin in a 30 cm strip, if you landed within 5 cm of your nominated distance in the long jump or managed four high jumps without a miss. It was all done with goodwill and any bonus performance was applauded by all.
In Division 2, Doncaster scored well, coming fourth, and have closed the gap on Nunawading and Mornington and now look certain to finish in the top three, though finishing first or second would ensure we progress to the Premier Division.
After a disappointing result last week, the Women’s Under 18 came back with a narrow win, while the Under 14’s returned to the winner’s table with a massive win, being the third team in the state. The Men’s 40+ team narrowly went down to Diamond Valley and were also third in the state.
Abbey Caldwell (F20 600 metres) and Darren Menezes (M16 60 metres) both scored over 500 points, while the only athlete to top the state in Division 2 was Alastair Christy (MOP Mile). Athletes to top the state in their age groups included Alastair Christy (MOP Mile), Abbey Caldwell (F20 600 metres), Darren Menezes (M16 60 metres).
The final round of competition before the Christmas/New Year break will be held on Saturday 21st at Box Hill and Aberfeldie with pre-entries currently open until midday Wednesday. We want to strongly encourage everyone to compete in as many events as possible this weekend to help maximise our points score.
If you are only planning on running one event, we’d love to see you enter another track or field event to score extra points for the club. All that matters is finishing or getting a valid throw or jump which will count towards our score. Please come and support your club, we need to finish in the top two to have a chance of progressing to the Premier Division next year, which is where we belong!
Christmas Party tomorrow night!
Tomorrow is our annual Christmas Party at the Tom Kelly Athletics Track!
All members are encouraged to start arriving at the track from 5:30pm with the heats of the Peter Ruff 100m handicap for Men and Women scheduled to start around 6pm.
Other events are the Tom Kelly Memorial 800m Handicap for Women, Ivan Harding 800m Handicap for Men and the Adam Robertson Javelin Handicap for Men and Women.
The club will put on a BBQ and drinks, Men please bring a salad and Women please bring a dessert.
Don’t forget to stay behind for the post dinner games of egg toss, three legged race and musical chairs!
Zatopek:10 Wrap
Congratulations to the Doncaster 4 x 400 relay teams, each finishing in third position in the final held at Box Hill on Saturday night. The women’s team of Stephanie Larkin, Katherine Katsanevakis, Liv Ryan and Melissa Niewoudt ran 3:57.33 and the men, Kyle Nicolussi, Liam Procaccino, Conrad Coumaros and Tristan Robinson ran 3:11.77 less than half a second behind the winning team. Congratulations also to Josh Maisey who finished a very respectable 21st in the main 10,000m race in a time of 29:39.77, the race was the fastest Zatopek in history with all athletes finishing in under 30 minutes.
Stations
Now in its fifth year, the traditional Christmas Eve stations session is being held on Tuesday 24th at Schramms Reserve (JJ Tully Dr, Doncaster. Behind the Manningham Council offices off Doncaster Rd). The session is open to all members of all ages and ability levels and the session can be tailored to suit your training schedule or fitness level. We ask that everyone meet at the pavilion on the top oval from around 7:45am for an 8am-8:10am start with the session likely to finish around 9am.
Engaged!
We want to give a special mention to long time DAC member Nick Finch who this week proposed to his girlfriend (and DAC member) Anita Strauks. We wish Nick and Anita the very best for their future together.
