Doncaster Newsletter – Victorian T&F Championships Week 1 18/2/2022-20/2/2022
The first weekend of the Victorian Championships was a memorable one for Doncaster, with five gold, four silver and four bronze medals plus two club records and many personal best and national qualifying performances.
As expected, Alessia Wynne won back-to-back Under 20 Women’s 100 metres hurdles title, while Liam McLennan won the Under 18 5000m walk, Anthony Jordan won gold in the Under 20 Para 100 metres, and Stephanie Ratcliffe defended her Open Hammer Throw title, winning by almost 10m.
However, Thomas Reynolds put in a stand-out performance, winning a hotly-contested Under 20 Men’s 400 metres in a new PB of 47.7,lowering the Under 18 club record he set at AVSL in December and breaking the Under 20 club record of 48.07 set by A. Wilcox in 1988.
Other notable performances included:
- Matthew Parrott’s decision to focus on the 100m over the 400m paid dividends when he defeated more fancied rivals to claim bronze in 11.20
- Josh Ascar winning silver and running another PB and national qualifier in just his third attempt at the 2000m steeple
- Petra Edwards’ return from injury took a big hop, step and jump forward with a silver medal in the Under 20 Triple Jump
- Personal best performances from Charlotte Senior, Lachlan and Aiden Marasco (1500m), Max McCool (100m), Jasmine Smith (Hammer Throw), Shakira Harding (90m Hurdles), Eliza Chivers (High Jump), Hayden Lloyd (Triple Jump) and Lucy Kearney, Will Katic, Peter Holland and Christian Zapris (400m)
- And first time state final appearances by Anika Selvaratnam, Christian Zapris, Alex Lloyd, Hayden Lloyd, John Curry, Bella Fary and Alessandra Flynn.
Also, a huge thank you to the following families/parents who assisted with our club helper duties throughout the weekend: Rohan White, Murray Harding/Sonia Brito, Olivia Katic, David Wynne, Michael Gallagher, Andy Parrott, Ben Jordan, Jo Holland, Leighton Kearney, Piri Edwards and Josh Ascar. Your time and efforts are hugely appreciated by DAC, AV, the officials and the athletes.
States continue this coming weekend at Lakeside with a large contingent of our 800m runners, discus throwers and long jumpers looking to add to the impressive medal and PB tally.
