Women’s Winter Report
It would seem that the world (or at least grass) is at Abbey’s feet with U18 State Cross Country titles won at Albert Park, Ballarat, and Burnley. Other top performers in our women’s U18 team include Jessica Ng, Melissa Niewoudt, and Alissa Ramsdale(often up from U16 for relays).
Our Women’s Open team was represented by Claire Walpole, Colleen Kelly, Abbey De La Motte, Georgia Feben, and Connor Gist. Honourable mentions go to Claire and Colleen who competed in most of rounds, despite often being short of teammates.
Doncaster also had representation from one or two individuals across almost all the age groups. Lachlan Herd was the standout having qualified for the National Cross Country Championships in the U20 age group.
40+
The Men’s Over 40 team were standout performers having won Bronze at Jells Park Relays and Sandown Relays. Special mention to Campbell McLennan who played a provincial role in recruiting past athletes back to the team. Runners include Leighton Kearney, Richard Matison,JohnCurry, Stuart McClay, and three Olympians in Rod De Highden, Sean Quilty, and WhaddonNiewoudt.
Men’s
Though frequent 4th places may sound disappointing, the team that went from division 4 to the premiership in the space of 5 years is now itching closer to a podium finish. In addition, our division 7 team finished 2nd place overall and were promoted to division 6.
Matthew Johnsen was our standout performer both on and off the course. In addition to his enthusiasm in rounding up the numbers each round, Matthew was our best individual performer finishing 7th overall on the individual ladder. Ben Ashkettle(NZL) was also in the top 10 finishing 9th overall. The open team is strengthened by Dave Ridley (NZL), Josh Maisey(NZL), John Portwood(UK), Adrian Patti, Nick Jamnick(USA), Gerard Heaney (IRL), Chow Lui(SGN), Joel Tobin White, Lachlan Herd, Tristan Harradine, Patrick Forno, and Tom Robertson.
The last time the team won medals was at the Sandown relays in 2007. We believe 2018 will be our year as we add additional talent to the team. On behalf of the whole team, we would like to give a special thank you to those who helped with timing, recording, supporting, and taking photos. Please join us for Cross Country in 2018!
