2019-02-23 Shield Final

Doncaster Newsletter

The Shield Final at Lakeside was an exciting day. The Men’s under 14 team battled hard all day and a successful relay pulled them up from third to second. With many of them moving into under 16 next year, this should make that team more competitive. The 40+ Men improved on their two previous appearances at Shield Final to finish 7th, the Under 18 Women were hurt by a lack of field event representatives but managed to finish 9th while the Under 16 Men were severely undermanned but all members of the team put their best foot forward all day and the Open Men were hit hard by injuries but still managed to put in some great performances.

Throughout the day there were many notable performances across the age groups:

  • Ben Purser breaking the club record in the Under 14 2000m Steeple by 7 seconds while Charlie Oakley ran an 11 second Personal Best in the same race. Ben backed up in the 1500m, then ran a Personal Best in the 400m and finished off the day by running the third leg of the 4x100m
  • Alissa Ramsdale (U18), Luke Sinn and Caleb McLennan (both U16) all ran Personal Best performances in the 1500m, perfect lead up to this weekend’s state championships
  • Darryl Kilmartin (40+) getting Personal Bests in all four of his events (100m Hurdles, 1500m, Pole Vault and 100m)
  • Kai Sapolu continued his recent run of super form by equalling his Personal Best in the Under 14 Pole Vault
  • And despite being the only Open Men’s representatives, Conrad Coumaros, Liam Procaccino and Christian Christopher all won their heats of the 100m, Liam also won the 400m a few hours later

We would like to say a huge thank you to the parents who assisted not only throughout the day but throughout the season with our club helper duties. With your help the program is able to run on time, with minimal delays and your assistance is greatly appreciated by DAC, AV and all the officials who give their time to make the competitions happen.

Next season will hopefully be another positive year with our Under 16 Men’s team to benefit from most of our Under 14’s coming up and the Under 18 Women’s team will be in a similar boat with several promising athletes coming up, our 40+ Men are aiming to continue their positive upward trend while both Open teams will be looking to improve and we are looking at entering teams in the 40+ Women’s and Under 20 Men’s competitions.

With many DAC athletes in action over the next two weeks at the Victorian Track & Field Championships as well as the Victorian Masters Championships and the Australian Championships the club is poised to finish the 2018/19 season on a successful note.

Thank you and good luck to all members
