Start lists to mouth water over. Temperature sitting at approximately 22 degrees. It was set to be a superb competition, it didn’t disappoint.
A cream of the crop line-up including Commonwealth Games, World Juniors, World Relays, and World University Games representatives; the race had it all. Katherine Katsanevakis went into the race with the fastest time of 2015 (2:04.9h), she lead the field early on and started to make a move at the bell lap. 2014 National Champion Brittany McGowan worked her way up the field and pounced at 250m out, and managed to hold off Katsanevakis (2nd) and Anneliese Rubie (3rd) for the win. Another solid performance for Katsanevakis of 2:05.41. Making her Australian Athletics Tour debut, Georgie Buckley ran wide for the first lap in a very congested race finishing in 11th place with a time of 2:10.30.
Coming off a difficult run in Hobart Eddie Vining was determined to position himself well early on in the race to set up the final lap. He did just this, sitting in third position behind Alex Pettigrew (NSW) and Timas Harik (VIC). Similar to McGowan, Harik and Vining made their run for the finish 250m out. Harik in the end too strong taking the win with Lachie Barber finishing fast to take second place. Vining coming home in third in a personal best of 1:49.73.
