Round 9 – 04/02/2023
Doncaster athletes had to travel for round 9, so points were down, but we did finish in the top half of the Premier division, which augers well for the Playoffs. It was a big welcome back to Kevin Rassool, who was the second fastest 200 metre runner in the state, after his recent showing in the High Velocity meet. Another standout performance came from Lula Parrott who achieved her first national qualifier in the Hammer Throw, a fantastic achievement from one of our young, up-and-coming female athletes.
The over 40 teams both finished fourth in the state, but other age groups didn’t do as well. However, with one round left before the playoffs, three of our age groups are in the mix to claim region pennants. Our Under 20 Women hold a slender lead over Collingwood and our Under 18 and 14 Men are neck-and-neck with Diamond Valley and Essendon respectively.
Also, a shoutout to Alex Jones who won the 400m at the Wangaratta Gift over the Australia Day long weekend. Alex won in 48.45 off a handicap of thirty seven meters, beating second by two tenths of a second.
This weekend the 40+ athletes take centre stage in the Victorian Masters T&F Championships at Doncaster, with the last round of AVSL being held on Saturday 18th at Frankston and Keilor. Entries are already open, so make sure you register to avoid missing out!
Athletes need to be aware that the Playoffs this year are held over two weekends, with two venues to choose from. Saturday March 18th at Doncaster and Glenhuntly – 100, 400 program at each with 4×100 relay. Saturday March 25th at Aberfeldie and Yarra Ranges – 200, 800 program at each with 4 x 400 relay. Athletes need to have competed three times and have competed at least once in the event, otherwise they will not be allowed to take part. This will include relay teams.
Country clubs can compete at their own venues. So athletes who have been concentrating on their favourite event, will find they are ineligible to compete on the other Saturday. So please find the opportunity to compete on the alternative program, so you are qualified to compete on both Playoff days, to give Doncaster its best chance. Also include an extra event or two so you can score maximum points.

David Vaughan scored 1,239 with Campbell McLennan on 1,140, Just ahead of his wife, Laura, on 1,066.
