Round 8 – 21/01/2023
Round 8 was our Powerplay, and it didn’t work out as well as we had hoped. Obviously many were still on holidays, so though we did better than in Round 7, we didn’t quite finish as high on the table as we would have liked. The two over 40 and under 14 teams did particularly well. Two of the three other clubs using their Powerplay finished near the bottom, so we weren’t alone.
A special mention to Stephanie Ratcliffe who returned to competition at Doncaster for the first time in a year after spending time attending college in the USA. Steph, who won silver at the 2022 Australian Championships, won the elite Hammer Throw competition with a massive performance of 66.18m. Such was her dominance, she finished 6.71m ahead of second place!
Also a special mention to Nicole Reynolds who finished 2nd in the final of the 400m at the Rye Gift two weeks ago. Nicole finished in 56.08 off a handicap of 26m.
We also want to say thank you to the following people who assisted us with our club helper duties on Saturday: O’Neil Menezes, Lydia Rinaudo, Andy Parrott, Campbell McLennan, Nathan Down, Emma Bakker, Harry Maddocks, Tim Denny, Laura McLennan, Lewis McLennan, David Rowlands, Angela Jordan, Lula Parrott, Justin Botha, Kim Peak, Renee Reardon, Kath Gawthorn and Wendy Smith.
Round 9 of AVSL is being held next Saturday the 4th at Aberfeldie and Yarra Ranges. Entries are now open, and we encourage you to register now so you don’t miss out! There are plenty of slots available in track events, while sheets are filling up in field events. Currently, the following field events still have slots available:
Aberfeldie
Pole Vault: 1pm (3.20m+), 2:30pm (2.60m-3.50m) and 4pm (1.55m-2.90m)
Long Jump: 1pm (Elite only 6m+ for Men, 5m+ for Women), 2:15pm, 3pm, 4pm and 5pm
Hammer: 1pm (Elite only 35m+ for Men, 30m+ for Women) and 4pm (Throw & Go)
Javelin: 2pm (Elite only 35m+ for Men, 30m+ for Women)
Yarra Ranges
Triple Jump: 1pm (Elite only 13m+ for Men, 11m+ for Women), 2:15pm, 3pm, 4pm and 5pm
Discus: 1pm (Elite only 35m+ for Men, 28m+ for Women) and 4pm (Throw & Go)
Shot Put: 1pm (Elite only 13m+ for Men, 11m+ for Women), 2pm, 3pm (Throw & Go), 3:30pm, 4:30pm and 5:30pm
Pole Vault: 1pm (3.20m+), 2:30pm (2.60m-3.50m) and 4pm (1.55m-2.90m)
Athletes need to be aware that the Playoffs this year are held over two weekends: Saturday March 18th at Doncaster– 100, 400 program with 4×100 relay and Saturday March 25th at Aberfeldie – 200, 800 program with 4×400 relay. Athletes need to have competed at three separate rounds and have competed at least once in the event, otherwise they will not be eligible for the final.
Athletes who have been concentrating on their favourite event may find they are only eligible to compete on one of the two playoff weeks. Please find the opportunity to compete on the alternative program, so you are qualified to compete on both Playoff days, to give Doncaster its best chance of avoiding relegation. Also include an extra event or two so you can score maximum points.
Entries across separate AVSL venues:
With AVSL entries open, we would like to ask athletes to please refrain from entering events across two venues unless you can make it to both venues for your events.
We have noticed some athletes are registering for certain events which are held at the same time at different venues. When start lists are published, the heats are already pre-seeded and athletes not turning up at one venue to compete at another venue results in empty lanes and half-empty heats. This also impacts our ability to effectively fulfil club helper duties.
Please consult the timetable and avoid entering at two venues if you are unable to commit to them. This will result in full heats (better competition) and fewer timetable delays.
