XCR Round 9: Sunday 4th September

Eighteen of our distance athletes competed in Round 9.  Burnley has long been a feature near the end of the winter season; those months where athletes try to improve ‘staying power’ up to ½ marathon (road) distance!  Nine athletes; 1 female and 8 male achieved just that!  Four junior athletes competed over 5km, as did 5 of Open and Masters Athletes.  The start was an early one, so that the (lucky) Fathers could arrive home in time for their Sunday BBQ or roast!  A happy Father’s Day to the Fathers and Grandfathers of the DAC community!

Brothers, Lachlan (U18) and Aiden (U16) Marasco had an excellent day of running, clocking just over 17 minutes for their 5km!  They were joined by 2 other juniors, Josh Ascar and Grace Wilson (both U18), who have both had outstanding winter seasons; running in almost all rounds to date.  Congratulations to these junior athletes who have done us proud over the XCR season, juggling this with their studies, school events and much more!

Sue Kilmartin was 3rd among the 50+ women (5km); with husband Darryl in tow most of the way.  The newlyweds seem to be synchronising their distance running – both finishing in 24.18, and providing different accounts about who has been pacing who!  “He ran off on me!” [Sue Kilmartin].  Jim Finch was one of the few 60+ men brave enough to tackle the 21.1km distance, and has been ever-consistent this winter season.  Jim just scraped in under 2hrs; very much earning his roast!  Son Nick, and daughter-in-law, Leah, were there to greet him at the finish line, after themselves having excellent runs.

Wow – Lydia Rinaudo did it again!  This time 7th in the Open Women over 21.1km!  Congratulations to Lydia on a great comeback to running over the course of winter 2022!  Many of us may not be aware that Lydia’s journey back to peak fitness has been ongoing for a couple of years; an inspiration to all!  Also completing the ½ marathon distance were the DAC men; Alistair Christy 10th in a very competitive field 290-strong!  He was ably joined by Erick Niyiragira, Matthew Christy, Brock Goodings, Brendan Culleen, and Nick Finch (Open), and Jason Merrett and Jim Finch (both Masters).  21.1km is no mean feat – congratulations to all!
